Outlander star Sam Heughan along with soon-to-be TV’s Supergirl Melissa Benoist are set to play the two leads in the romantic drama Oxford for Screen Gems, according to Deadline.
Benoist will play a freshman American Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University who falls for her arrogant and standoffish teacher’s aide (Heughan). After learning of his terminal illness, she hits the road with him in an attempt at really living.
The script was written by Allison Burnett (Underworld: Awakening) who penned and directed this year’s under-the-rug Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland) film Ask Me Anything. Screen Gems hopes to lock in a director soon before they set a shooting date.
Benoist is poised to take television by storm this fall when Supergirl premieres on CBS as one of the only female-led superhero stories currently being told on television (or at all), next to Agent Carter. She got her break on Fox’s Glee and moved on to appear in last year’s critically acclaimed Whiplash, and alongside Robertson in The Longest Ride this year. She will also be seen in the upcoming indie film Band of Robbers, and the coming-of-age story Low Riders.
Heughan plays the main character’s love interest James Fraser on the Starz series Outlander, which is set to premiere its second season in 2016. He will also be starring opposite newcomer Arabella Oz in the indie When the Starlight Ends.
