Mel Gibson Talks About His Role In Upcoming Film ‘Monster Summer’

A brand new adventure film, Monster Summer, is just on the cusp of its release. The film comes to audiences from actor turned director David Henrie. 

Monster Summer sees a group of teens pull an old detective out of retirement to investigate strange occurrences that keep popping up around their town. 

The cast for Monster Summer is led by both Mel Gibson and 17-year-old Mason Thames, joined by Lorraine Bracco, Patrick Renna, and Julian Lerner. 

So far, Thames’ biggest role in his very young career has been the lead part in Scott Derickson’s The Black Phone. Based on a short story from Joe Hill, Black Phone followed Thames desperate attempts at escaping a basement after he was kidnapped by a serial killer. 

Opposite Thames, Gibson has both directed and starred in a plethora of films over his extensive career. He took up both acting and directing on Braveheart, while also helming Hacksaw Ridge and The Passion Of The Christ. Some of his iconic roles also include a lead role in the Lethal Weapon series, and even starring as the titular character in the first three Mad Max films. 

While talking to ComicBook.com about the film alongside Thames, Gibson took the chance to elaborate on the dynamic between his and Thames’ character, and how the two playing off each other is different from what’s usually expected from that type of story. 

“Together, they kind of learn something from each other, but they have this mystery that they have to solve together. And it’s kind of a buddy movie, you know?” Gibson said.
