Looks like Mel Gibson might be starting off down Hollywood’s favorite redemption destination, the old comeback trail. The infamous Actor/Director/PR Nightmare has been in talks to appear in the upcoming 2014 release of The Expendables III. Rumor has it he will be playing the villain, a role he has recently been typecast in public life more so than in his films. After alienating much of the public with his bizarre and often controversial off-screen behavior, it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
Bringing him onboard as the villain would seem to the logical choice for the franchise, which in its first two movies has served as a type of narcissistic resurrection syndicate for 80’s action stars. But, like the films or not, they seem to be incapable of not generating sequels. This, despite the fact that the first two movies combined did less than $200 million domestically. Would Mel’s injection into the so-called franchise be the shot in the arm that it needs to make EX III a summer smash? We’ll have to wait until August 2014 to see.
If signed, Mel would join Milla Jovovich, Nicholas Cage, Steven Segal and (possibly) Wesley Snipes. Of course that list should also include Carl Weathers and Michael Biehn (if anyone in charge of casting for EX III is reading this, please take that last suggestion to heart).
