While the next chapter in the Captain America/MCU story won’t be out until February of next year, some insights into the story and its characters have been recently revealed but not how fans expected. According to ComicBook.com, McDonald’s revealed new merchandise for the film, revealing both characters and the type of look that they will have. There have also been some social media posts and speculations about the announcement.
The toys show obvious characters such as Captain America, who is being mantled by Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson, as it was revealed at the end of Avengers: Endgame and got more development in the miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
But other characters in the film haven’t had as big of a connection to the MCU as Sam Wilson. Some of those characters include the new Falcon (Danny Ramirez) and Red Hulk, the transformed version of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford). Ford’s character is also planned to be a part of Thunderbolts right after Captain America.
Another thing from the new toy line-up is a possible costume change in the film. Two toys feature Captain America, one that only shows Sam Wilson with a shield, while the other has both the shield and wings back from when Wilson was flying as the original Falcon. This might suggest some character development throughout the film.
The reveal also shows two new characters to the mix, which ComicBook.com suggests are heroes Songbird and Sabra.
According to Marvel.com, Songbird started as a villain, eventually picked up by Baron Zemo to become part of the Thunderbolts, a set of villains who disguise themselves as heroes. Eventually, with her powers of supersonic sound, she wanted to become an actual hero, fighting with her Thunderbolt comrades to overthrow Zemo.
As for Sabra, she is an Israeli superhero who has enhanced strength, and speed and is well-adapted in hand-to-hand combat. According to Newsweek, she first appeared in the 1980s in The Incredible Hulk comic series but has negative viewpoints on Arabic characters based on her lore, which could cause problems for Marvel given the current Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
Sabra’s actress, Shira Haas, was confirmed back last year during the D23 expo when specifics on the film were revealed, however, Songbird’s character and actress have yet to be confirmed. Not only this, but Marvel plans to release a Thunderbolts film next year, yet Songbird’s character has not been revealed in the cast so far in its production.
Captain America: Brave New World is set to be released on February 14, 2025.
