Maya Hawke (Stranger Things, Inside Out 2) has boarded the live-action Magic: The Gathering feature film from Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment, becoming the first major talent attached to the high-profile adaptation. Matt Johnson (BlackBerry, Nirvanna the Band the Show) is attached to direct and is co-writing the screenplay alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald.
The feature marks the anchor project in a broader collaborative pact between Legendary and Hasbro to construct an interconnected film and television universe centered on the multi-billion-dollar fantasy brand. While specific logline points and character identities remain under wraps, insiders indicate that Hawke has secured a primary role in what is envisioned as an expansive ensemble piece, with producers reportedly making the Stranger Things breakout their top casting priority before opening auditions to other performers.
Debuting in 1993 from creator Richard Garfield and Wizards of the Coast, Magic: The Gathering established the collectible trading card genre and has since expanded into a global cultural ecosystem with a playing community exceeding 50 million people worldwide. The franchise’s multiverse lore has fueled professional tournament circuits, conventions, digital titles, and crossover card lines with established properties including The Lord of the Rings, Marvel, and Star Trek.
The casting adds significant momentum to Hawke’s upcoming screen calendar as Stranger Things wraps its run. In addition to voicing Anxiety in Disney and Pixar’s record-setting Inside Out 2, Hawke will next be seen in Lionsgate’s prequel tentpole The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Graham Parkes’ romantic comedy Wishful Thinking, and the Netflix original series God of the Woods.
