And the McConaissance continues with the Oscar winner set to star in writer/director Harmony Korine’s upcoming film The Beach Bum. Until now, Korine’s feature films have all been dramas, with some having comedic elements peppered within (Gummo, Mister Lonely). However, this time around he intends to make a stoner-comedy, which is curious to say the least, especially when considering the testimonials given by those involved. John Lesher (Producer) and Thorston Schumacher (CEO of Rocket Science) make it sound as though the film is shaping up to be a straightforward comedy. Although when peering back at Korine’s past credits, one has a difficult time believing that the man is capable of delivering anything that could be classified as “standard”.
McConaughey is to play (you guessed it) a beach bum dubbed Moondog. The description of said character paints a picture of a man raised by The Jungle Book’s Baloo, and a more charismatic version of Pauley Shore in any of his 1990’s comedies – or perhaps a sort of spiritual extension of James Franco’s character in Korine’s Spring Breakers. We’re excited to see the result of Korine’s regularly avant-garde stylings paired with the fervent dedication McConaughey so often brings to his roles. With principal photography scheduled for July, it’s unclear when The Beach Bum might hit theaters.
McConaughey’s next trip to the theaters will be as The Man in Black for the highly anticipated film The Dark Tower, out July 28.
