Mattel and Sony to Bring ‘View-Master’ to the Big Screen in Live-Action Movie

Mattel is continuing its trend of turning beloved toys into live-action films, this time with a movie based on the iconic View-Master. The project, a collaboration between Mattel Films, Sony Pictures and Todd Black’s Escape Artists, will bring the vintage stereoscopic viewer to a new generation of fans.

The View-Master, first introduced in 1939, allowed users to view 3D images through collectible reels featuring various themes, from nature scenes to iconic landmarks. The upcoming film is described as a “four-quadrant family adventure,” meaning it’s expected to appeal to viewers of all ages.

Producer Todd Black, along with Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and Tony Shaw from Escape Artists, is set to bring the film to life. Kevin McKeon and Arturo Thur de Koós will oversee the project for Mattel Films.

Black expressed excitement about the opportunity, stating, “View-Master has long been a window to the wonders of the world, sparking imagination in kids and adults alike. Teaming up with Robbie Brenner and Mattel Films gives us the chance to honor that legacy while creating an entirely new adventure for today’s audience.”

Robbie Brenner, head of Mattel Films, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the nostalgic value of the View-Master while emphasizing its potential for storytelling.

“View-Master has inspired generations to embark on boundless adventures, offering a treasure trove of storytelling possibilities for this film,” Brenner said. “We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Escape Artists’ Todd Black to bring this Mattel franchise to life.”

This isn’t the first time a View-Master film has been in the works. A similar project was set up at MGM in 2019, though it did not materialize. Mattel’s other ongoing projects include live-action adaptations of Masters of the Universe and an animated Bob the Builder feature, demonstrating the company’s commitment to reimagining its classic brands for modern audiences.

With its nostalgic appeal and adventurous concept, the View-Master movie is sure to pique interest among longtime fans and new viewers alike.
