After several delays, more news about the sequel to The Batman has finally surfaced. In an Instagram post made on Friday, Matt Reeves revealed that the script to The Batman sequel has been completed.
The post shows a blurred-out photo of the script’s cover page, though a Batman logo can clearly be made out, along with the top text, which most likely states the film’s title, The Batman: Part II. The caption of the post states “Partners in Crime (Fighters)”, which is a play on words, most likely referring to Batman’s role as a crime fighter, but also to Matt Reeves’s co-writer Mattson Tomlin.
This news has been a long time coming. After the first film was released in March of 2022 and grossed over $772 million worldwide, a sequel was quickly announced only a month later in April. Reeves’s work on the script had been slow, with James Gunn, who is now heading DC Studios along with Peter Safran, discussing this very topic in an interview for Entertainment Weekly just last week. Gunn said:
“Listen, we’re supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
He also added, “I am irritated by people. I mean, it’s just that thing people don’t need to be entitled about. It’s going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay. And Matt’s not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay.”
After several delays, the sequel to The Batman is scheduled for release on Oct. 1, 2027, five and a half years after the first movie’s release.
