Fans of the more dramatic, serious, and unhinged roles that Russel Crowe has been taking over the past few years will rejoice in the wake of the first look at director Matt Hookings’ new boxing drama Prizefighter. Russel Crowe is no stranger to onscreen violence as seen in action-drama classic Gladiator and the under appreciated gem The Cinderella Man.
However, this film is taking an more emotional stance as it follows the compelling true story of famed boxer Jem Belcher. Hookings, who writes, produces and stars here as the fighter, dominated his early fights with his unique combination of skill, speed, and his scientific approach to the sport. Soon he became the Champion of England, a natural talent, who was full with charm, style and grace.
After an debilitating accident almost ending his career, he begins a long, grueling road to recovery which eventually sees him compete in a death-defying standoff – known as The Forgotten Fight of the Century – to reclaim his title once and for all as England’s youngest boxing champion. The film is being directed by Daniel Graham, Prizefighter also features Marton Csokas, Jodhi May, Julian Glover, Steven Berkoff and real-life boxing champ Joe Egan. The film enters the ring on Prime Video on 22 July.
