Promotion for Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming Masters of the Universe is underway as we have our first look at Nicholas Galitzine in the leading role of He-Man. Galitzine most recently starred in The Idea of You alongside Anne Hathaway for Amazon, a film that became the biggest rom-com for Amazon, attaining 50 million viewers in the first 2 weeks.
Travis Knight (Bumblebee) is the director behind the film and Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) having penned the script for the reboot. The trailer depicts a blast from the past as views from the 1980s appear on a television screen with a Stentorian narrator overtop. Galitzine appears in a pink shirt as Adam, looking upon the Sword of Power which will allow him to channel the power of Grayskull and make him He-Man. As He-Man he is the most powerful man in the universe, and we are given a brief look into the bright world of Eternia, along with He-Man’s cohorts. Idris Elba will play Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Camila Mendes plays warrior Teela, Kristen Wiig will voice Roboto, and we are shown He-Man’s Battle Cat.
The film is an adaptation of the classic 1980s cartoon and toy line of the same name, also having been made into a live-action film in 1987. Galitzine stars as Prince Adam, heir to the throne of Eternia, but after being exiled to Earth his home planet is taken over by Skeletor (Jared Leto). Collider’s Rob London does a great job of highlighting the power struggle that will ensue in a fight for Eternia, with He-Man needing all of his allies to battle back against Skeletor.
Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba, The Wire), Teela (Camila Mendes, Riverdale), the Sorceress (Morena Baccarin, Deadpool), Fisto (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Atomic Blonde), Ram-Man (Jon Xue Zhang, The Brothers Son), Roboto (Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids), and Adam’s parents, King Randor (James Purefoy, Rome), and Queen Marlena (Charlotte Riley, World Without End). Opposing them are the fearsome forces of Skeletor, including Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie, Community), Trap Jaw (Sam C. Wilson, Dodger), Goat Man (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, Game of Thrones), and Tri-Klops (Kojo Attah, The Beekeeper).
The Masters of the Universe has one live action adaptation that released in 1987, directed by Gary Goddard and starring Dolph Lundgren in the leading role. This film was a massive misfire creatively and financially, even acting as a catalyst that sank Cannon Films studio. An animated film titled He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword had a warmer reception and connected the original animated show with the animated show She-Ra: Princess of Power.
Almost 40 years after the previous live action adaptation, Masters of the Universe will be hitting theaters on June 5, 2026.
