New Zealand-born actor/filmmaker Taika Waititi is in the midst of a deal with Marvel that will place him in the director’s seat for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok.
Waititi’s previous directing work includes an episode of the comedy series Flight of the Conchords, and 2013’s horror-mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows. But this isn’t his first leap into the world of superheroes as he had an on-screen supporting role in DC Comic’s 2011 film Green Lantern.
Thor: Ragnarok will be the 3rd installment in the Thor film franchise and, upon its release, the 17th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The previous Thor directors were Kenneth Branagh (Thor) and Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World).
Chis Hemsworth (Rush) returns in the title role of the Norse god-turned-superhero, and Tom Hiddleston (War Horse) as Thor’s quasi-evil stepbrother Loki.
Waititi has also been tasked with helping pen Disney’s upcoming animated feature Moana (2016).
Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to be released on November 3, 2017.
