After six months of searching, Marvel has finally attached screenwriter to their upcoming MCU reboot of Blade, which will star two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali in the title role. Stacy Osei-Kuffour, writer of HBO’s hit-series Watchmen and Amazon’s nazi-hunter show, Hunters has been chosen to write the script. This also marks Marvel’s first Black writer as the lead writer for a film.
Eric Brooks, aka Blade, is known by the Vampire Nation as “the Daywalker,” a half-vampire half-human that has the hunger to feed but is immune to sunlight and silver. Blade has devoted his life to ridding the world of all vampires, using his unique physiology to his advantage.
Some fans speculated that Marvel would bring Wesley Snipes into the MCU to reprise his role from the original film trilogy which began in 1998 with Blade and ended in 2004 with Blade: Trinity. But, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel ended that speculation by announcing that Ali would take on the role.
The film is still in need of a director and a release date, but John Wick directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch have both expressed an interest in the project. It’s unclear if the film will shoot for PG-13 rating or keep the franchise mature. It was recently announced that Deadpool 3, which will bring Deadpool to the MCU, will stick with an R-rating, so it’s possible that Blade will as well.
