‘Marty Supreme’ Soars Beyond Expectations Amid Packed Holiday Releases

The Christmas week box office was loaded with major releases, making for a surprisingly crowded holiday lineup. However, an unexpected reaction was the shake-up of Marty Supreme. The film outpaced initial projections and raced ahead of Sony’s Anaconda, earning second place over the long weekend. The film follows a young Marty Mauser, played by Timothée Chalamet, in a 1950s table-tennis drama. Before the film even opened, its marketing was defined by an unusually aggressive promotional campaign — ranging from Chalamet becoming the first person to stand atop the Las Vegas Sphere to the rollout of exclusive vintage jackets worn by select celebrities.

With the help of the performances of the star-studded cast and the bold marketing campaign, the film is expected to earn around $27 million within four days from 2,688 theaters. Its $9.5 million Christmas Day debut, combined with an additional $27 million earned through the holiday weekend, puts the film on track to approach $30 million by Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025.

Film reviewer David Rooney had high praise for the film, specifically highlighting the stylistic ambition, writing that the “genre-defying original is an exhilarating sports comedy” and “Uncut Gems meets Catch Me If You Can and maybe you’re halfway there.”

However, Marty Supreme fell just short of its competition, James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. The third installment in the Avatar franchise proved that Cameron still commands the box office. The film is projected to finish the period with $80 million to $85 million domestically and total $700 million globally. On Friday alone, the film added more than $22 million, along with delivering one of the top-ten domestic Christmas Day performances of all time.

Anaconda takes third place in the current period. The monster comedic film starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd lands in a weaker position despite expectations. While Sony initially predicted a $22 million four-day haul, Disney’s Zootopia 2, which was released on Thanksgiving Day, could overtake it depending on the weekend turnout. Critical response has been mixed.

In a crowded holiday lineup, Marty Supreme has continued to hold its own, surprising industry observers and showing no signs of slowing down — with box-office prospects that look increasingly promising.
