Without a doubt, Martin Scorsese definitely has a fair share of fascinating epics to his name. Over his diverse career, he’s done everything from gritty crime dramas to massive biopics. Most recently, The Wolf of Wall Street back in 2013 has reaffirmed the director’s place as a top biller in Hollywood. And while he currently is involved in a number of big projects in both film and television, his latest directorial work, Silence, is one that could turn out to be his most massive yet.
Based on the novel by Shūsaku Endō, Silence tells the story of two Jesuit priests during the seventeenth century who travel to Japan in hopes of finding their mentor and to spread Christianity in the land. But when they arrive, they are faced with fierce violence and torment by the native people. It’s mysterious historical epic that has been kept under wraps for the most part, unlike many of Scorsese’s past projects. The film has yet to get a release date from Paramount, however a recent report has revealed that Silence may be stretching the boundaries of a suitable theatrical run time already. According to Variety’s Kris Tapley, the film is currently 195 minutes long.
This new report could come as exciting or discouraging news, especially since The Wolf of Wall Street was also a news topic when it was rumored to be initially almost four hours long. But it will be interesting to see how much (if any) cuts are made to Silence‘s 195 minutes. The film will surely get an awards-friendly release date, so hopefully we will get the first trailer soon.
