If audiences didn’t already feel old when Sally Field (Forrest Gump) was cast as Aunt May in The Amazing Spider-Man series a couple years ago, then the rumor that Marisa Tomei (Crazy, Stupid, Love) is next to play Peter Parker’s aunt and guardian will surely force fans to reflect on their age.
It makes sense that Sony would cast a younger Aunt May, as the newest film version of the web-slinger will focus more on the character’s high school years than any other cinematic version, making for a younger Peter Parker.
This news comes after the recent announcement that Tom Holland (The Impossible) will play Spider-Man/Peter Parker, the boy who gains new powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Along with Holland’s casting, Sony also announced that Jon Watts (Clown, Cop Car) will direct.
An Academy Award winner, Tomei has had an impressive recent filmography that includes The Wrestler (2008), the political thriller The Ides of March (2011), and the upcoming comedy Trainwreck.
Holland is expected to make a cameo as Spider-Man in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Sony’s new Spider-Man film will hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
