Margot Robbie Admits to Hyping ‘Barbie’ Up

Margot Robbie stars in Barbie and is a producer for the film. Like her character, she says she would get a little carried away during filming. Robbie admits to Collider that she hyped up Barbie.

In reference to Greta Gerwig, Robbie said, “I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director.

She gave some examples to the studios, like “Dinosaurs and Spielberg,” to show that anything made well makes a lot of money over the years for studios. Robbie stated, “And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig. And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?!”

Initially, Robbie did not want to be the star. She didn’t want the director to feel pressured to put Robbie in the role. The director was Gerwig as their first choice. Robbie said, “So I was just really upfront about, like, ‘I won’t be offended in the slightest. We could go to anyone. Whatever story you want to tell and whoever you want that to be, I support that. I’ve got skin in the game as a producer, I don’t have skin in the game as an actor, so be free with that choice.’” To that, Gerwig said she wanted to write the role for Robbie. Robbie was apprehensive at first, but Gerwig insisted. From the beginning, it was Robbie and Ryan Gosling printed in the script as Barbie and Ken.
