Mandy Walker has been elected the 48th president of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). She is the first woman to hold the president position. Walker has many Cinematographer credits to her name, including the NASA space drama Hidden Figures, the Disney live-action remakes Mulan and the recently released Snow White, and the Baz Luhrmann-directed Elvis Presley biopic Elvis.
It was her work on Elvis, in particular, that Mandy Walker received the most recognition and acclaim. She received a Best Cinematography nomination at the 95th Academy Awards, becoming the third female cinematographer to do so. For her work on Elvis, she also became the first woman to win the ASC Award for Feature Film Cinematography.
“It is a great honor to be the president of the ASC and an even bigger privilege to be the first woman to hold the position,” says Walker in a statement. “I am so humbled to take on the responsibility of representing a society that has carved out an inspiring, inclusive space to meet and support other cinematographers. I am proud of our century-old legacy to advance the art and science of cinematography, and I’m excited for the future of our organization.”
The news was made Saturday, alongside the announcements of new vice presidents, a new treasurer, and a new sergeant-at-arms. Mandy Walker is preceded by the previous ASC president, Shelly Johnson.
