Scream queen Maika Monroe (Longlegs, It Follows) is back.
Reuniting with writer/director Chloe Okuno, the two had previously collaborated in the 2022 paranoia-inducing thriller Watcher. Okuno’s latest film, Brides, is a vampiric tale set in 1960s Italy and will follow Monroe as Sally Bishop, a nervous woman visiting a secluded villa who soon encounters the owner, a Count who grows increasingly attracted to her.
The film is anticipated to include heavy feminist themes and is characterized as “gothic, glamorous, and gory.” It will also serve as a subversion to the traditional Bram Stroker narrative.
The production team for Brides is led by Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu under their Likely Story banner. When reflecting on the film’s conception, Bregman said, “Brides is set to redefine the horror genre with Choe Okuno’s unique blend of feminist themes and gory visuals. The script is dynamic and unsettling in all the best ways. Chloe always brings such dread and complexity to her characters, and we can’t wait to work with her and Maika to bring Sally to life or to un-death as the case may be.”
Brides is currently looking for international distribution and is set to be presented at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM). UTA Independent Film Group will represent global and domestic rights. The film is currently in pre-production and is expected to begin principal photography in Spring 2025.
