Magnolia Pictures has acquired the distribution rights to the new comedy Results from director Andrew Bujalski. The comedy follows two personal trainers (Guy Pearce and Cobie Smulders) whose lives change when they take on a wealthy client.
Bujalski, who wrote and directed the film, is hot off the success of 2013’s faux-documentary Computer Chess, which also premiered at that year’s festival and followed a fictional 1980s tournament of chess players trying to find the best chess-playing computer. While that film was shot using the videotape technology from the era, Results appears to be a much more traditional production.
Also unlike Bujalski’s last film, Results has a much more recognized cast with Smolders and Pearce headlining the film. The movie also stars Kevin Corrigan (The Departed), Giovanni Ribisi (Ted), and Brooklyn Decker (Battleship), easily Bujalski’s biggest cast yet. The director is known as one of the pioneers of the “mumblecore” movement, the films of which often feature 20-something characters talking about nothing in particular and are shot on minuscule budgets.
Results is set to premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival on Tuesday, January 27.
