The long loved and highly popular card game Magic: The Gathering will be coming to the screen in documentary form, titled Ignite the Spark, The Story of Magic: The Gathering. It was announced that the series will be getting a Netflix series adaptation as well, which is in the works with the Russo Brothers. With the card game moving far beyond the table, it’s clear the impact and cult following the game is holding up to the test of time and is moving it into new territory.
The documentary will chronicle the game’s history since its creation in 1993 and all of its expansions since then. It was created by Richard Garfield, who had a background in mathematics and game design, and then kickstarted the trend of collectible tabletop card games. The game is said to have been played by over 35 million people since its start, and is still gaining a following now.
The team behind The Toys That Made Us, a documentary series about popular toy franchises of the last few decades, will be helming this project. Producer Brian Stillman will be producing and co-directing with Kelly Slagle. Since they are already familiar working with projects of this caliber and subject matter, they seem like a great choice to tell this story.
No distributor has been picked up yet, but news will likely come to light soon with the massive popularity of the Magic: The Gathering Franchise.
