Box office scores have been slow this week as the industry holds its breath for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania next weekend. Still, Channing Tatum is back on top, with Magic Mike’s Last Dance grossing an estimated $8.2 million over the weekend.
Tatum won’t be stacking as many bills this time around, however. The Last Dance had the lowest-performing opening weekend out of the whole trilogy. The film did have a more minor release than its two predecessors, opening to 1,550, compared to well over 3,000 with the others. Warner Bros. planned somewhat of a hybrid release, with the film to be released on HBO Max – although no date is set. Abroad the film fared better, raking in $10.4 million.
Two James Cameron films competed for the two spots. Avatar: The Way of Water continues its barnstorm, bringing in $6.9 million, with a domestic total of $646.9 million. Oversees, the sequel garnered another $18.9 million. It now stands at $2.21 billion worldwide.
Cameron is still collecting bills from another blockbuster he made twenty-five years ago. The re-release of Titanic, this time celebrating its silver anniversary, gushed in $6.4 million. The remastered 3D version of the iconic ill-fated love story is likely getting a Valentine’s Day bump.
Meanwhile, 80 for Brady collected on America’s love of pigskin and bargains, finishing strong in fourth with an additional $6 million. The film – which takes place over Super Bowl weekend in 2017 – garnered headlines for offering matinee prices for all of its showings. It seems to be working, as the sports comedy has grossed an impressive $25 million over its first two weeks.
Knock at the Cabin had more of a lukewarm second week. After finishing first last week, the M.Night Shyamalan film dropped to fifth with $5.5 million. In sixth, another franchise installment in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish did reasonably well with a tally of $5.5 in its eighth weekend.
