Taken 3‘s Maggie Grace and Orange Is The New Black‘s Uzo Aduba are set to star in the upcoming Southern drama Showing Roots. Filming on the project is scheduled to begin in Baton Rouge, Louisiana later this month.
The story centers on the effect that Alex Haley’s groundbreaking 1977 slavery miniseries Roots has on a small town and the shift it causes in the racial relationships therein. A local beauty parlor is a flashpoint of change as patrons are inspired by the landmark series to begin efforts at integration. Director Michael Wilson (The Trip To Bountiful) and writer Susan Batten have been working to bring the film to fruition for many years. Cicely Tyson (The Help) and Elizabeth McGovern of TV’s Downton Abbey will join Grace and Aduba in the cast.
Grace’s Taken 3, in which she returns as Liam Neeson’s daughter Kim, hits theaters on January 9th. She’s currently in production on the romance The Choice, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks.
Aduba is best known for her breakthrough performance as “Crazy Eyes” Warren on the Netflix original series Orange Is The New Black. After winning an Emmy in 2014, she’s in contention for a Golden Globe for the role in this weekend’s ceremony.
