The ferocity of George Miller‘s Mad Max: Fury Road struck a chord with critics and cinephiles when the film opened this past summer. That passion continues as best of 2015 critics prizes begin to trickle out. Fury Road, on the cusp of winning Best Film honors at the National Board of Review earlier this week, received five prizes from the Boston Online Film Critics Association. The film earned Best Film as well as Best Director honors for Miller.
Perhaps surprisingly, The Road Warrior prevailed over critical darling and presumed Oscar frontrunner Spotlight, a film that seemed it might especially appeal to Beantown critics considering the films’ setting. Spotlight did earn a Best Screenplay citation as well as a mention for the films’ ensemble cast but missed out on the top awards. The Boston Online Film Critics Association (not be confused with the much longer standing Boston Film Critics Society- which will announce prizes tomorrow) are just a few years old, having been established in 2012. Its membership, clearly, consists of web-based film critics in the Boston area.
