Macaulay Culkin, who played Kevin McCallister in Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has given us his idea for what a legacy sequel to the classic holiday films would look like. On his tour, “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin,” the actor shared his interest in doing a sequel, but it “would have to be just right.”
On the tour, he said, “I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard, and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me, and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me. The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship.” This potential sequel would have Kevin take the place of the bandits from the original films, who were played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Heard. He finally said, “That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing.”
There are six films in the Home Alone franchise, but only the first two films are remembered fondly. Those are also the only two films starring Macaulay Culkin and directed by Chris Columbus. However, Chris Columbus seems to be agai0nst the idea of a Home Alone reboot, with the director stating in August that it would be “a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.” So if a reboot with Culkin does end up happening, it is unlikely that Columbus would return.
