Blumhouse’s M3GAN 2.0 is getting an upgrade. Despite the film only grossing $20 million against its $25 million budget, the sequel to 2023’s M3GAN will be receiving an extended, unrated cut, revealed by director Gerard Johnstone. In an interview with Discussing Film, Johnstone mentioned that the new version will include scenes that were cut from the theatrical rendition to keep the film under two hours, with elements included that are slated to enhance the storytelling.
“There will be an unrated version with a few [extra] scenes,” Johnstone says. “We pack a lot in… I get it, it’s a long time to sit in the theater. So, we really wanted the [theatrical cut] to be under two hours. However, in the unrated cut, you’ll see a few things that didn’t make it into the theatrical version. Also, there are many lines in the trailers that help tell the story, but M3GAN doesn’t say them in the film at all.”
M3GAN 2.0‘s predecessor also received an extended cut, and while it included more gore in the film, the versions remain almost identical. M3GAN originally served as a more straight-up horror picture, despite its campy nature. Its 2025 sequel, however, ditches the gore and leans more into the action/sci-fi elements. Audiences might have felt turned off by the large tonal shift, which may have led M3GAN 2.0 to not perform as well as the first film. The film currently sits at a 57% critical score and an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is unclear as to when the unrated version will be released, but the M3GAN universe is still expanding, with Blumhouse’s spinoff film SOULM8TE slated to hit theaters in January of next year, while Gerard Johnstone gears up to direct his next project, a ‘Monster High’ feature adaptation for Mattel and Universal Pictures.
