M.T. Vasudevan Nair, who was more commonly referred to as M.T., passed away in a hospital in Kozhikode after experiencing breathing difficulties. M.T. was most well-known for his screenwriting and his contributions to Indian films, specifically Malayalam films. M.T. worked as a screenwriter for more than 50 films, and even directed 7 of his own films.
M.T. received the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times. He won the award for Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992) and Parinayam (1994). The writer is known for working with directors such as Hariharan, Padmarajan and Adoor Gopalakrishnan, together creating some of India’s most influential films.
M.T. Was also a well-established and decorated author, writing multiple award-winning novels. At just 23, he won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for his first novel, Naalukettu. In 1995, M.T. was granted the highest literary award in India, Jnanpith, for his years of service to the medium and contribution to Malayalam literature. Then, in 2005, he received the third highest civilian honor in India, Padma Bhushan.
Earlier this year, a 9-part miniseries titled Manorathangal aired on the streaming platform ZEE5 Global. The anthology series features 9 episodes which adapt a selection of M.T.’s most iconic short stories. The series pays tribute to M.T. and his influential career.
