M. Night Shyamalan is teaming up with romance author Nicholas Sparks to bring his next project to life. The pair worked on an original story idea that serves as a premise for a film as well as a novel. Shyamalan is set to direct the feature while Sparks is writing the book that coincides with it.
According to People, the novel is titled Remain and is set to release on October 7th. The plot of the work follows a “New York architect, Tate Donovan, as he arrives in Cape Cod to design his best friend’s summer home. Donovan is looking for a fresh start after his recent discharge from a psychiatric facility where he was treated for acute depression. Still grappling with the loss of his beloved sister, Donovan meets Wren, a young woman who makes him challenge everything he knows about his logical and controlled world.”
As for the film side of this creation, nothing has been officially announced yet, but there have been reports that Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor are to star opposite each other, with Gyllenhaal as Donovan and Dynevor portraying the mysterious woman he is connected to. This does seem to be a genre change for Shyamalan, who is known for his mind-bending supernatural thrillers like 1999’s The Sixth Sense, 2002’s Signs, and 2016’s Split. But not so much of a change for Sparks, who rose to fame for his written works like 1996’s The Notebook and 1999’s A Walk to Remember, and is used to his novels being adapted into films.
It won’t be until the release of the novel in October that people will know what to expect from Shyamalan’s feature adaptation.
