Famed director Luca Guadagnino lined up a new project to direct after the removal of DC’s Sgt. Rock of his schedule. The Call Me By Your Name director is in talks to direct Artificial, a recounting of the clamorous time at artificial intelligence company OpenAI in 2023, which saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired, all in a matter of days.
Heyday Films’ David Heyman and Jeffery Clifford are set to produce the feature that is being put together at rapid speed at Amazon MGM Studios. Simon Rich wrote the script, and is producing as well. Additionally, Jennifer Fox is also in talks to produce.
Sources at The Hollywood Reporter say Amazon is looking to get production started this summer, with San Francisco and Italy being ideal shoot locations.
Actors names have been tossed around, but no deals have been made so far. We Live In Time‘s Andrew Garfield, A Complete Unknown‘s Monica Barbaro, and Anora‘s Yura Borisov are among the names getting discussed.
Altman co-founded OpenAI, but was ousted as the head of the company by his board after safety concerns regarding AI and reports of abusive behavior in the fall of 2023. However, he was reinstated five days later after a revolt. THR says if all goes as planned, Garfield would play Altman, Barbaro would play chief technology office Mira Murati, and Borisov would play Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who led the movement to get rid of Altman.
Artificial would be the third time the Queer director would unite with Amazon MGM. He recently finished After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri, which releases in theaters Oct. 10. The first film would be Challengers, starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor.
The previous film Guadagnino was on track to shoot, Sgt. Rock, is a World War Two action movie that would have starred Colin Farrell, for DC. A late summer start of production was being discussed, however, DC reconsidered its plans, citing “daylight issues.”
