Recently released romance thriller Love Lies Bleeding follows two women falling in love with each other all while getting trapped in crime and family drama.
Since the film does follow the blossoming romance of main characters Lou and Jackie, played by Kristen Steward and Kate O’Brian, there are multiple scenes revolving around sex and the love that they have for one another.
However, in an exclusive interview with People Magazine, O’Brian shared with the publication that filming and taking part in these scenes aren’t really romantic.
She says that during filming, these intimate moments can become really silly, especially when having to use buffers and layers between actors and actresses during those times.
Not only that, but because the film was shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico, it was really hot during those shoots and O’Brian says that she felt really sweaty and gross, hoping she didn’t smell bad next to her co-star.
The buffers mentioned are part of the contracts that talent signs when discussing intimacy that will occur during a film. Rose Glass, director and writer for the film, told People that the contracts are very specific when it comes to what moves will occur and how much nudity each actor will show on camera at which specific angle and when things get changed, they have to send it all in writing for actors to sign off on it again.
Not only this, but there are intimacy coordinators throughout the duration of the project, focusing on the choreography of the scenes and making sure talent on set are comfortable taking part in the actions.
As for the filming itself, Glass says that most of the time the people on set are so focused on doing their jobs and making sure nothing falls on the actors during shooting that they often forget that they are filming an intimate scene.
“It is all quite unsexy, to be honest,” Glass said.
Love Lies Bleeding is now in theaters.
