Lonely Island Mockumentary Has a Release Date

Universal has announced the release date for the still-untitled Lonely Island movie starring the band that consists of SNL alum Andy Samberg (Hot Rod), Jorma Taccone (Neighbors), and Akiva Schaffer (Grown Ups 2).

The music mockumentary that aims to take shots at music documentaries like Katy Perry: Part of Me and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never will release June 3, 2016. The movie follows a rapper (Samberg) whose latest album flops and forces him rejoin his old boy band for a reunion tour. It’s unclear whether this will include The Lonely Island’s past hits like “I’m On a Boat” and “I Just Had Sex,” or if the music will be completely new.

Judd Apatow (Knocked Up) joined the project as producer last August. His latest directorial effort, Trainwreck, written by and starring Amy Schumer, is set for release July 17. Schaffer (Hot Rod) and Taccone (MacGruber) are co-directing the Lonely Island movie, which is shooting now.

Tyler Lyon: When Tyler isn't thinking about the lack of a Canadian presence in D2: The Mighty Ducks, whether Princess Leia can now be considered a Disney Princess or discovering 8-bit classics on his 3DS, he's cheering on the Cubs, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, and Hawkeyes.
