Live-Action ‘Moana’ Teaser Trailer Breaks Several Viewing Records 24 Hours After Its Debut Online

The release of the teaser trailer online for the live-action version of Disney’s Moana has already broken several viewing records within its first 24 hours, Screen Rant reports.

Released in 2016, the animated Moana follows the titular character, who feels beckoned by the call of the ocean, much to her father’s apprehension. When her people’s way of life is threatened, however, she leaves her Polynesian island home of Motunui for the first time and teams up with the demigod Maui to uncover the source of the danger.

Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, and starring Dwayne Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho, the film was released to critical acclaim, with a 95% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, and grossed over $640 million worldwide.

Now, the first trailer for the live-action remake has appeared online and has already earned 182 million views within its first 24 hours. This makes it the second most-viewed trailer for a Disney live-action remake behind the 2019 version of The Lion King, which had 225 million views. It also comes in third among Disney trailers released this year overall, behind Fantastic Four: First Step‘s 202 million views and The Devil Wears Prada 2‘s 185 million views.

Directed by Thomas Kail, who also directed Hamilton on stage, the film stars Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson, again as Maui.

The live-action Moana is scheduled to release in theaters on July 10, 2026.
