Filming has officially begun on the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2. The film will be a sequel to the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, which was released last year and grossed $636.6 million worldwide. This second film will adapt the animated sequel, which was released in 2014.
Filming for this live-action second film was announced by its director, Dean Debois, in an Instagram post. The post features an image of Debois holding a clapboard with the film’s logo. The post features a caption which reads: “Back in the saddle! Day 1 of principal photography on HTTYD2! The adventure begins…..” Another detail visible in the attached image is the Filmed for IMAX logo on the clapboard, which provides official confirmation that, as with the previous movie, the film will be shot with IMAX-certified cameras and formatted for IMAX theaters.
Much of the cast of the first live-action How to Train Your Dragon will be returning for the sequel, including Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, Gerard Butler as Stoick, and Nick Frost as Gobber. Julian Dennison as Fishlegs, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, and Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut will also be returning. In addition, it’s been previously announced that Cate Blanchett will be reprising her role as Hiccup’s mother, Valka, from the animated original. The role of the film’s antagonist, Drago, has also been cast, with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson playing the role.
The live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 is set to be released in theaters on June 11th, 2027.
