Principal photography has officially wrapped on Netflix and Legendary Entertainment’s live-action feature adaptation of the iconic anime franchise Mobile Suit Gundam. Directed and written by Sweet Tooth creator Jim Mickle, the big-budget sci-fi epic concluded roughly four months of filming in Queensland, Australia, where it operated under the working title Teardrop.

The project represents the first live-action feature adaptation of the $20 billion media property originally created by Hajime Yatate and Yoshiyuki Tomino for Sunrise in 1979. Co-produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks, Legendary Pictures, and Mickle’s Nightshade banner, the narrative tells an original standalone story centered on an interplanetary conflict between Earth and its former space colonies.

Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo lead the cast as star-crossed, rival mech pilots operating on opposing sides of the galactic war. Their characters navigate shifting political allegiances and an emerging threat that forces them into a high-stakes race across the stars. The broader ensemble includes Michael Mando, Shioli Kutsuna, Gemma Chua-Tran, Nonso Anozie, Javon Walton, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, and Jason Isaacs.

Filming took place primarily at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast, alongside external location work in Brisbane and Toowoomba. Local production authorities estimate the shoot injected approximately $110 million into the Queensland economy while employing more than 350 local crew members and extras.

Mickle previously noted at a press event that while the film constructs an expansive galactic scope featuring iconic ship and mobile suit designs alongside new additions, the narrative core remains anchored by human relationships. The production now enters an extensive post-production phase focused on visual effects and digital assembly. Netflix has not yet set a formal premiere date, though the feature is expected to debut globally on the platform in 2027.
