Estimations for Gerard Butler’s and Morgan Freeman’s third stint in ‘Angel Has Fallen’ predicted that the action film would draw in $12 million to $16 million range for the box office during its opening weekend. As Sunday comes to close, the numbers seem to tell a different story as the film is expected to pass those indicators claiming $20 million in its first weekend.
‘Angel Has Fallen’ shows promise for coming close to equal with its predecessor, 2016’s London Has Fallen, at $21 million and the original Olympus Has Fallen at $30 million, keeping the trend of strong openers for each film. The star studded cast, as well as strong audience perception, helped catapult the film to the new number 1 slot. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the cast also includes: Jada Pinkett Smith, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo and Nick Nolte.
At number two, Universal’s Good Boys only took in $11 million during its second week. The last three spots come at close numbers, with Sony’s Overcomer at $8.2 million and Disney’s Lion King and Universal’s Hobbs and Shaw both at $8.1 million. Hobbs and Shaw is closing in on $500 million with help from an expected $106 million opening in China so, if projections hold, it’ll mark China’s highest gross opener for August.
Unfortunately, not all could be winners even with an early opening, as Ready or Not was only able to draw in $7.5 million looking in from outside the top 5.
