Back in May of this year, it was rumored that Michael, the upcoming musician biopic following the career of Michael Jackson (played by Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson), may be split into two parts due to the lengthy 3-and-a-half-hour length of an early cut of the film. After the release of the film’s first trailer on November 6th, Adam Fogelson, the chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, discussed the rumored split at a quarterly earnings call. According to the Hollywood Reporter, here’s what Fogelson had to say:
“While we’re not yet ready to confirm plans for a second film, I can tell you that the creative team is hard at work making sure that we’re in a position to deliver more Michael soon after we release the first film”.
Fogelson also states that he and the rest of Lionsgate are satisfied with director Antoine Fuqua’s current director’s cut of the film, saying, “Since the last time we were together on an earnings call, we have now had the great pleasure of seeing the director’s cut of the first film, and it is exceptional.”
After going through reshoots of the third act and initially being delayed to a 2027 release date, Michael is now scheduled to be released in standard and IMAX theaters on April 24, 2026.
