Lionsgate Snags ‘Megalopolis’ And Announces New Release Date

The new film from Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis, has finally found its distribution company at Lionsgate. The news was initially reported by IndieWire. Starring Adam Driver, Megalopolis follows an ambitious architect who sets out to rebuild a city better than ever after an event that leaves it in shambles.

As Hollywood Reporter noted, Megalopolis had showings at Cannes and received mixed reviews. Since then, it went through several deals overseas with many different distributors for different territories, before Lionsgate finally nabbed it for distribution in the US.

Following Lionsgate picking up Megalopolis, Coppola immediately championed the deal, saying that he likes to keep up partnerships with companies who he has worked with before. Lionsgate helped Coppola’s Apocalypse Now Final Cut distribute to audiences.

“This is why I am thrilled to have Adam Fogelson and Lionsgate Studios release Megalopolis. I am confident they will apply the same tender love and care given to Apocalypse Now, which is currently in its 45th year of astounding revenue and appreciation,” he continued.

The film will be released, including premium formats, on Sep. 27. Hollywood Reporter also noted that the anniversary showings of Interstellar start around that time, so both will be competing, but will both lose out on IMAX screenings the following weekend due to Joker: Folie à Deux.
