Lionsgate has finalized a deal to distribute The Reckoner, an upcoming original action thriller starring Game of Thrones alumnus Peter Dinklage. The project reunites the studio with director Kenji Tanigaki following their recent collaboration on the martial arts feature The Furious.
The screenplay for The Reckoner is written by Derek Kolstad, the creator and screenwriter behind the John Wick franchise and the 2021 action film Nobody. While the studio is withholding specific plot details and character descriptions, the production is being developed under Anthony and Joe Russo’s independent production banner, AGBO.
The project marks a quick follow-up for Tanigaki, a veteran martial arts choreographer whose latest directorial effort, The Furious, generated more than $31 million globally after its initial debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Erin Westerman, President of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, noted that the film expands the studio’s relationship with both Tanigaki and AGBO following a slate of recent action co-productions.
Dinklage and Kolstad will serve as producers on the feature alongside David Ginsberg under their Estuary Films banner. They join AGBO producers Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting, with the Russo brothers attached as executive producers. According to Russo-Otstot, Chief Creative Officer at AGBO, the initial concept was brought directly to the company by Kolstad and Dinklage before Tanigaki was selected to helm the project.
Dinklage, who recently completed work on the television spin-off Dexter: Resurrection and is currently filming the second season of FX’s Alien: Earth, will transition to the production later this year. Lionsgate has not yet announced a production schedule or an official theatrical release date for the thriller.
