Lionsgate Acquires Film Rights to Judy Blume’s ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’

The highly sought after rights to Judy Blume‘s famous novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret have just been acquired by Lionsgate, who has also already greenlit the film for production. Blume has held on to the rights for many years and only recently mentioned that she may want to see the book on the big screen, which many companies jumped on in a race to get the okay from the author herself.

The young adult book is from 1970 and since its release has provoked much conversation because of its discussion around puberty, teen sexuality, and growing up with uncertain faith. The main character Margaret faces many of the same struggles of pre-teen girls around the world and is based on Blume’s own younger self.

The Edge of Seventeen‘s Kelly Fremon Craig will be writing and directing and James L. Brook will produce. The two impressed Blume with their work on The Edge of Seventeen, another teen girl coming of age story, and visited Blume in person in Florida to convince her that they are the right ones for the project. The production team that pitched the project is made up of many people who have been significantly personally impacted by the book growing up, and it looks to be a passion project all around.
