She may not have funding (or Tina Fey‘s approval yet) but Lindsay Lohan is bound and determined to make Mean Girls sequel, and has already written a script treatment to showcase her idea. During an interview via Facebook Live with CNN, she emphasized that she has been trying to get a Mean Girls sequel going for years.
Although she hasn’t disclosed any specific plot points, it can be expected, given the actresses current ages, that the sequel Lohan has in mind would be a flash forward, with the girls now being adults. She also expressed an interest in having Jimmy Fallon and Jamie Lee Curtis in the film. Lohan still has to get Tina Fey, the film’s original writer/producer, on board, as well as Lorne Michaels and Paramount Pictures, but it would be fun to see our favorite high school ‘mean girls’ back on the big screen.
Rachel McAdams had expressed interest a few years back in a sequel (given Tina Fey returns as writer). But Tina Fey seemed to express in the same interview that it was ‘too late’ for a sequel, and that she regretted not doing one right after the first one. Lohan still seems to have hope that she can change Fey’s mind, and she also believes that the original director Mark Waters would “happily come back” for a sequel.
Since her widely publicized alcohol and drug struggles in her early 20s, Lohan has not been able to regain the kind of success she found in her teens, with films such as Freaky Friday, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, and Mean Girls. In 2014, she had a documentary tv series focusing on herself called Lindsay, which aired on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network. It followed her work to regain a professional presence in the entertainment industry after years of drug and abuse scandal.
Given the improvement she has shown in the last few years, hopefully Lohan can begin to make a new name for herself, and perhaps someday in the near future we will see the original Mean Girls cast reunite for a Mean Girls sequel.
