When it comes to horror, director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell are responsible for two massive franchises: Saw and Insidious. While Saw has spawned a whopping 8 films, with the latest being released October 27, Insidious is currently on its fourth entry.
2010’s Insidious boasted the talent of Patrick Wilson (who’d go on to star in Wan’s The Conjuring) and Rose Byrne (Spy, X-men: First Class). They portrayed parents of a comatose child who is being terrorized by a demonic presence. Sadly, Wilson and Byrne did not return for the third entry, but it did mark the directorial debut of Whannell.
With Insidious: The Last Key, Wan and Jason Blum produced, Whannell penned the screenplay, and Adam Robitel (director of the underrated The Taking of Deborah Logan) helmed the film. The official trailer features lengthy segment in the franchise’s trademark otherworld: “The Further,” providing a glimpse of a handful of new supernatural creatures. Fan-favorite Lin Shaye also returns as Elise Rainier, a parapsychologist and the franchise’s consistent heroine. It’s unclear if the film is a prequel, sequel, or both.
Distributed by Universal Pictures, Insidious: The Last Key hits theaters on January 5.
