

Disney’s latest live-action remake Lilo & Stitch has topped the box office this weekend in China and worldwide. The film grossed RMB62.3 million, or $8.7 million, in the country over May 23-25. This puts it over the the locally produced films which have been more popular throughout most of the year in China.
The rest of the top five is comprised of biopic The Dumpling Queen with $3 million, financial thriller A Gilded Game with $2.5 million, comedy The Open Door with $1 million and the animated juggernaut Ne Zha 2 with $900,000. Ne Zha 2 is on its 17th weekend in theatres, and it has already become one of the highest grossing films of all time with $2.14 million.
Lilo & Stitch had a monstrous Memorial Day weekend at the box office, and it is expected to continue to perform well as the summer months rapidly approach. China’s total box office numbers for the weekend landed at $20.4 million.
