The best friend duo first appeared over 20 years ago in 2002. The Disney original was animated and followed “a young and parentless girl (Lilo) [who] adopts a ‘dog’ (Stitch) from the local pound, completely unaware that it’s supposedly a dangerous scientific experiment that’s taken refuge on Earth and is now hiding from its creator and those who see it as a menace” (IMDb). The movie shows unlikely friendships and ohana, which is Hawaiian for family.
Now Lilo and Stitch are back again, this time in live-action. The new film will follow closely to the original. Collider provided more information about the upcoming movie. Chris Sanders who voiced Stitch in the original is reprising his role. Joining Sanders are Maia Kealoha (Lilo), Hannah Waddingham, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Zach Galifianakis, Sydney Agudong, Jason Scott Lee, Courtney B. Vance and others. Behind the scenes is director Dean Fleischer Camp, who will make his sophomore directing debut with the film. The writers include Chris Kekaniokalani, Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders.
Disney is promoting the movie with their other films. Aladdin, Cinderella and The Lion King have all been included in the promos with Stitch causing chaos in their worlds. Lilo & Stitch will hit theaters on May 23.
