Angus MacLane’s Lightyear will hit theaters this week. The highly anticipated prequel tells the story of the beloved Buzz Lightyear in a totally different universe, this is a tale about the hero as a Space Ranger, rather than a toy brought to life.
No enormous numbers have been reported, as today is the film’s official release date, but the picture did garner $5.2 million yesterday in previews. The movie has been projected to make somewhere between $70 or $80 million opening weekend in the domestic box office, which normally would be confidently enough to secure that top spot. However, this weekend is unusually crowded in theaters, with films like Jurassic World and Top Gun: Maverick also hoping to have busy Father’s Day weekends.
That being said, Lightyear does carry the advantage of being new unlike the other two films which have already had their opening weekends. Additionally the Toy Story prequel is a family movie, meaning it can make more ticket sales simply because it appeals to younger audiences now and older audiences nostalgically buying tickets.
Hopefully this holiday weekend proves successful for Lightyear and brings in enough revenue to give it the opening weekend it deserves.
Lightyear opens in theaters today, June 17.
