First conceived in the early 2010’s, Letterboxd has just been recently acquired by Canadian company Tiny. The social media platform was made in 2011 to connect fans of movies all around the world.
Tiny is an investment firm based out of Canada, and recently took the majority stake in the company. The founders will still continue the independent leading structure, while pushing the company forward with the acquisition.
Letterboxd was originally founded by Matthew Buchanan and Karl Von Randow, based out of Auckland, New Zealand. Within the last five years alone, the site surpassed 10 million members. According to Deadline, the site has been profitable since 2019, specifically with audiences ages 18-24. On the site, users can log and share movies they watched, write reviews, and even make lists of movies, among many other features.
Letterboxd has even been continuing to partner with distributors for independent projects, in order to help promote them.

Tiny Co-founder, Andrew Wilkinson, had added on to the deal, saying “Our aim is to make Letterboxd the ultimate destination for anyone looking to discover or discuss movies online. If you’re running out of things to watch, it’s because you haven’t used Letterboxd yet—and we believe that the potential for superior discovery is a large opportunity.”
