An exclusive from Variety tells us that Lionsgate and WWE Studios have granted a theatrical release date to Leprechaun: Origins, the film that will attempt to reboot the well-known cult horror franchise.
The film will be released in select theaters on August 22nd of this year. Originally, the studios did not intend for the film to see theaters and planned for a release straight into homes on August 26th. However, after receiving positive feedback from a successful presentation at this year’s Comic-Con, the origin film has now been deemed fit for big screen audiences.
Until this reboot, the loveably campy franchise was thought to have ended after a six-movie run that began back in 1993, all featuring Warwick Davis (the Harry Potter franchise, Willow) as the lead mythical villain. The new film, written by Harris Wilkinson and directed by Zach Lipovsky (Tasmanian Devils), will star Dylan Post as the bloodthirsty leprechaun. He is most known for his WWE persona, ‘Hornswoggle.’ In the film, his existence is revealed to two couples during their backpacking trip across Ireland. They will be played by Stephanie Bennett (Big Eyes), Andrew Dunbar (Alien Trespass), Melissa Roxburgh (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days), and Brendan Fletcher (Altergeist). All four actors have had roles on the hit CW television series Supernatural.
Whether or not this is the film that finally lands the leprechaun his pot of gold, remains to be seen.
