Fresh off his critically acclaimed performance in The Revenant, Leonardo DiCaprio and his production company, Appian Way, are set to produce the post-apocalyptic book The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
While the YA post-apocalyptic genre may have all but run its course in the film world, the themes of environmental conservation and climate change are what led DiCaprio to want to take on this project.
The story takes place in 2049 when the Earth is egregiously suffering from climate change and the like. An iconoclastic group called the Wolfpack overthrows the government and begins dictating people’s lives. A young woman, Eden, escapes the Wolfpack with three other girls and attempts to dismantle their power.
Appian Way’s The Revenant is currently up for an Academy Award for Best Picture. We will have more on The Sandcastle Empire as it moves further into development.
