Lena Waithe and Issa Rae are diving back into their complex history, but for the big screen.
Waithe, known for creating the Showtime series The Chi and the BET series Boomerang, revealed on Bustle’s One Nightstand podcast that she is developing a comedy based on her and Rae’s “friendship breakup.” Waithe has confirmed that they are both set to play the “thinly-veiled versions” of themselves, with Waithe admitting that the characters will even have the same names. Waithe revealed she was initially “writing beats” for Rae, but then just “ultimately just started writing the script.”
Waithe worked on Aziz Ansari’s series Master of None, playing a lead role and being credited as a writer on six episodes. Rae is known for creating the HBO comedy series Insecure, for which she was nominated for several Emmys and Golden Globes. Her most recent acting credits include the 2025 Black Mirror episode “Hotel Reverie” and the 2023 comedy-drama American Fiction, which was nominated for Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards.
