Sony’s The Legend of Zelda is one step closer with the announcement of a release date today. The studio’s live-action adaptation of the iconic video game is set for theatrical release on March 26, 2027. Nintendo announced the news on their app Friday morning.
Wes Ball, who directed the Maze Runner trilogy and recently directed last year’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to helm the film. There have been no announcements of plot details or a cast yet. The feature The Legend of Zelda adapts the 1986 Nintendo gaming franchise of the same name. The fantasy game follows young Link and Princess Zelda, who attempt to save the Hyrule kingdom from the evil Ganon.
Zelda will compete against the next Godzilla x Kong franchise from Warner Bros. and Legendary on the same day. Paramount’s fourth installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is also set for theatrical release the week prior.
Sony distributes the film that hails from Nintendo and Avi Arad’s Arad Productions, Inc. Nintendo representative director Shigeru Miyamoto will produce alongside Arad.
The Zelda live-action film was first announced in November of 2023, with Miyamoto posting the adaptation had been in the works “for many years now.” He added, We have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
Zelda is one of the most beloved and iconic Nintendo properties, and the company is known for its protection of its titles. 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the first film to adapt a Nintendo property since the 1993 live-action version of the same game. The 2023 version, starring Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy surpassed $1.3 billion globally.
