Up until now, Marvel has kept exceptionally mum regarding their upcoming teen superhero flick Spider-Man: Homecoming. Details have been released little by little; we already know that Tom Holland will be the web-slinging Peter Parker, and that Michael Keaton and Michael Chernus are playing villains The Vulture and The Tinkerer, respectively. Fans have been playing a guessing game with the rest of the cast, however, until now.
A cast call sheet that was leaked on Reddit is finally putting several names to faces within the Spider-Man lore, as well as few other potential easter eggs. For the female cast, Angourie Rice (The Nice Guys) will be playing Betty Brandt, the Daily Bugle employee formerly portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Laura Harrier (The Last Five Years) will play Liz Allen, Flash Gordon’s high school girlfriend, and Harry Osborn’s eventual wife in the comics. When Zendaya was cast, it was unclear how big her role would be in the film, but sources are now nearly sure that she will be the lead female as Mary Jane Watson, although she mysteriously appears as “Michelle” on the call sheet.
Other confirmed cast additions are Fargo‘s (TV series) Bokeem Woodbine as a third villain, The Shocker, and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds who will eventually turn into another villain, Hobgoblin. Selenis Leyva (Gloria in Orange is the New Black) will be a member of the high school staff, Mrs. Warren. Many are wondering if she may have ties to Miles Warren who, in the comics, was one of Peter’s teachers that eventually transformed into The Jackal.
It looks as though our young new Spider-Man will have a lot to contend with in this film, several villains and future villains to boot. At once, it reveals that Marvel has big plans for their Spider-Man franchise and that they are hoping to make it bigger and better than ever before. With a comic book character nearly run into the ground within the past decade, this move makes total sense.
