According to The Hollywood Reporter, Laura Dern (The Fault in Our Stars) will star in Judd Apatow’s (This Is 40) untitled comedy set in the world of obsessive female football fans. Apparently Dern came up with the idea, and brought it to Apatow. The pair then recruited Pam Brady, a longtime writer on South Park, who also co-wrote Team America: World Police, to write the screenplay. Although Apatow is not contracted to direct, he will produce the film through his Apatow Productions banner at Universal, with producer Barry Mendel (Bridesmaids), and Dern will also receive a producer credit.
Dern is a three-time Golden Globe Award winner and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Rambling Rose (1991), in addition to being nominated for several Emmy Awards. She is most notably recognized for her dramatic work, but has also shown her comedic skills from time to time. Most of her comedy work has been on the small screen with HBO’s Enlightened, and a couple of guest appearances on Drunk History and Kroll Show, but now she’s entering the world of high-concept studio comedies. She will next be seen in a pair of highly anticipated festival movies – Wild, to be released later this year, and 99 Homes, which will see a late 2015 release.
Apatow is currently wrapping up directing duties on the comedy Trainwreck, which stars Amy Schumer alongside an eclectic ensemble cast that also includes Marisa Tomei (Crazy, Stupid, Love), Daniel Radcliffe (Horns), Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin), and Lebron James.
